Let me give you the facts: The government estimates that almost 100 people die every year due to overdose of over-the-counter drugs and around 56,000 others end up in the emergency room due to misuse, including teenagers who use non-prescription medication as recreational drugs.

Read more:

How to Heal Yourself in 15 Days

NaturalNews

Can you really heal yourself in 15 days? Feeling some anxiety? There's a pill for that. Have high blood pressure? There's a pill for that, too. Suffering from sleepless nights? There's yet another pill for that, too.

Importantly, modern medicine and the pharmaceutical industry both believe there is no limit to how many prescription medications you can simultaneously take. If you have ten health problems, they've got ten different pills for you. And when those pills cause twenty different dangerous side effects, they're ready for twenty more prescriptions for you to dutifully swallow.

This idea that health is achieved by taking prescription chemicals is ludicrous from the start. And yet it's the foundation of the pharmaceutical industry. Take as many pills as you "need", they insist. Domar

Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
According to psychologist and Harvard Medical School assistant professor Domar (Self-Nurture), everything is never perfect, and if you expect it to be, true happiness and contentment will always be out of reach. To teach women to create reasonable expectations for relationships, careers and their bodies, the authors offer quizzes to determine how much perfectionism is influencing readers' lives and interview women struggling with perfectionism. In a three-part process, readers are encouraged to identify, challenge and restructure detrimental thoughts. For example, a woman who decides her neighbor is a more creative parent than she is because the neighbor sews exquisite Halloween costumes should tell herself, We all have strengths and weaknesses, and I do some things better than she does. The authors also offer step-by-step techniques to tame the perfectionist beast, such as meditation, yoga, mini relaxations and journaling, and advise readers on setting realistic exercise and eating goals. Although much of the advice, written with journalist Kelly, is obvious and easier said than done, it's also sound and detailed and provides a good starting point for perfectionist readers. But, if you are like most of the Western world, have you ever wondered why chocolate can be so addictive, apart from its rich sweet lingering taste? Well, it has to do with your brain chemistry and brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters.

What are neurotransmitters? They act like messengers or little power-brokers that run around in our brain telling the body what to do. They orchestrate our moods, influence our thought patterns, and affect our energy levels, states of alertness, concentration and drowsiness.

So what does chocolate and neurotransmitters have in common? Chocolate affects the brain by causing the release of certain neurotransmitters which can trigger emotions, one of which is euphoria; maybe that's why it is so desirable?

The health-benefits of chocolate have been known to us for some time now, but there is more to chocolate that we need to know. For instance, did you know that chocolate and cacao are not the same? True, there is a clear distinction between commercial chocolate which has no health benefits and organic dark chocolate, ideally with no added sugar. Yet if you're a chocolate lover, consider small amounts of raw cacao as a better option.

The reason why raw cacao is the best choice for healthy benefits is because raw cacao contains the very popular antioxidants (anti-aging guys) that make raw cacao a superfood. But there is more to know than just this.

Let's have a look at raw cacao:

Cacao is derived from Theobroma Cacao beans, which literally means "Food of the Gods". Cacao contains over 300 compounds including: protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber, iron, zinc, copper, calcium and magnesium. Magnesium helps to build strong bones and is a muscle relaxant associated with feelings of calmness. You might want to read some of these precautions before you sign up for the shot. If you’re opting for other ways to dodge the flu, here are 14 tips to boost your immunity and stay healthy this flu season.

1. Optimize your vitamin D level. Adequate levels of vitamin D are essential for our immune systems to function optimally. Unfortunately there are no significant dietary sources of vitamin D, most of our intake comes from exposure to sunlight. If you live far from the equator, you simply don’t get enough sun through Fall and Winter to make all the vitamin D you need. So unless you supplement during this period, your innate immunity will be compromised. vitamin D plays such a crucial role in so many aspects of your body’s functioning, that supplementing with it makes sense whether you decide to get the flu shot or not.

We know that influenza always gets worse during the winter months. Now there is good evidence to suggest that this is because as sunlight hours lessen during the winter, the people living in the northern hemisphere become vitamin D deficient and are susceptible to influenza infections of all kinds.

The current recommendations from the Food and Nutrition Board of the U.S. Institute of Medicine: from 200 to 600 IU/day depending on one’s age, are way too low.

These values were originally chosen because they were found to prevent osteomalacia (bone softening) and rickets. It is now recognized that vitamin D has many additional physiological functions, for which these levels are totally inadequate. A number of scientists are therefore calling for the Food and Nutrition Board in the U.S. and its counterparts abroad to reassess their current recommendations. Get your 25 hydroxy vitamin D level checked by your Doctor (if that is not an option, you can self test your level with ZRT labs)

Although the current normal range is between 20 and 50ng/ml, this is much too low for optimal health. You want your level to be between 50 and 70ng/ml.

This is the most important step you can take to prevent the flu! It may require a number of months taking 5,000 to 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily (especially during winter) under a doctor’s supervision, to optimize your blood level. Monitor your 25 hydroxy vitamin D status every three months until you are in the optimal range, then cut back to a maintenance dose of at least 2,000 IU a day.

2. Get adequate sleep. This is an indispensable requirement for a strong immune system.

3. Get adequate exercise. This keeps you robust.

4. Take actions to lower your stress levels.

Do breathing exercises, meditate, practice yoga, spend time doing something that makes you happy. Feeling spent, overwhelmed and or mentally run down has a causal relationship to your physical health.

Read more:
14 Ways to Prevent Swine Flue
from:
http://www.care2.com/

Autumn leaves

Christian Glitter by www.christianglitter.com

Autumn
outside my window
wind twirling, whirling, dancing
until the last leaf falls
straight at my window
as an invited Angel
how could I not love you
Autumn

How to Preserve the Colors of Fall Foliage

by <a title="Visit Annie B. Bond

I saw the most beautiful peach-red leaf today, one of the most beautiful fall foliage colors I have ever seen. This is a leaf I want to keep!

My mother had a trick she used to preserve the color in fall foliage leaves, and I have since seen this technique suggested in old folk formula books. It really works, and the leaves stay on the branches and keep their color for weeks. I’m happy to share this tip, and use it myself. Here is her secret:

All you need is a little bit of vegetable glycerin, water, and newly cut branches with colorful leaves. Just put about 1/2 a teaspoon into a vase full of water, stir, and then add the branches. With this, the leaves stay on the branches and keep their color for weeks. Refresh the water and glycerin every week. Pure vegetable glycerin is available in health food stores.

Here:
How to Preserve the Colors of FallFoliage
from my favotite site:
http://www.care2.com/

<iframe style="BORDER-RIGHT: medium none; For centuries, people have used awareness of the breath as a means of becoming more conscious and relaxed. Unlike other physical processes - like the heartbeat, for instance - breathing is easy to control and open to a lot of variation.

Here are some simple-to-do, time-honored ideas for playing with your breath to reduce stress and become more peaceful.

Be sure to do only what feels comfortable to your body. If you suffer from shortness of breath, for instance, be mindful not to push yourself too hard.

1. At several points in your day, simply become aware of your breathing. This could be as minimal as saying to yourself, “Here I am, breathing. This is the way I breathe. Good to be breathing. Good to have air to breathe.” Send gratitude to the air with your out-breath. Draw in the air like nectar.

2. How long can you hold your breath? Time yourself and see. Try this once a day for several days and you may find you are able to hold your breath for longer stretches at a time. Nothing heightens our awareness of the importance of breath like stopping it for awhile.

3. Try counting your breaths, and witness how long you go before you lose count or get distracted. Vary the ways you count. Some Zen Buddhist meditations count “one” on the in-breath, “two” on the out-breath, continuing to ten and then starting over again, unless thoughts intrude (which they always do), in which case you start over again with “one” at that point.

4. Consciously vary the tempo and depth of your breath. Pause for a count of three after inhaling, again for a count of three after exhaling. Pauses allow a place of rest and spaciousness to form. Or try doing a short panting breath for a few seconds, followed by a series of long, expanded breaths with pauses. Take note of your reactions, both mental and physical, to these variations on the theme of breathing. Which ones feel most comfortable? Which helped you feel more relaxed or focused?

Adapted from “Earth, Water, Fire, and Air” by Cait Johnson (Skylight Paths, 2002).

From: The Peaceful Power of Breath - Green Living.

How to massage away shoulder pain

Learn how to relieve shoulder pain with massage techniques. You can also
blend apples and pears with their seeds. If you have a regular blender
that runs at slower speeds, peels and seeds will not blend completely
and might destroy your blender..... .

You can blend greens whole, however I usually remove the stalks
from kale, collards, and chard as they add a peppery taste that I don’t
like. I always leave the stalks on finer plants such as spinach, dandelions,
parsley, cilantro, and others.... .

Read Ode To Green Smoothie" for benefits of drinking Green Smoothies and Green Smoothie Recipes.

Healthy Eating - the best DVD

This DVD is the best most honest healthy eating DVD I have ever watched.

Eating - 3rd Edition

Editorial Reviews

"Rivet yourself to your chair and watch Eating, a mind-blowing video experience that will forever change the way you think about food." - Joel Fuhrman, M.D., author of Eat To Live -author

Product Description
This award-winning DVD covers a lot of ground very comprehensively - and now has subtitles in Spanish, French, German and English (for the deaf).

Among the many highlights are interviews with Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Dr. Neil Pinckney, Dr. Ruth Heidrich and Dr. Joseph Crowe. New packaged products appear on the market every day. Each time you try one of these new products, you are foregoing the old-fashioned fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. As a result, you will not get enough nutrients from your meal.

Researchers are excited whenever they discover new benefits in produce of particular colors. The bright vibrant colors of fresh produce, such as the deep green of leafy vegetables, the lilac of blueberries, or the red of strawberries are a sign that this produce is packed with antioxidants, called polyphenols.

The brighter the color of the fruit or vegetable, the more nutrient combatants it has to prevent degenerative diseases. Now picture what happens to the original rainbow of colors after cooking. The colors fade like old laundry. How can it not be more obvious to us: by tampering with natural products, we are losing something essential for our health and beauty.

There is a scarcity of nourishment, but not of meals. In this country, we face unprecedented temptations. America is preoccupied with eating like no other country in the world. By giving in to the skillful seductions of the advertisers to try “new food," our bodies are starving while we constantly chew and swallow. Ironically, the variety and affordability of foodstuffs leads us to become overfed and at the same time undernourished. The best way to resist these temptations is to develop an attitude towards cooked food in general and adopt the raw food lifestyle.

Mark Twain wrote: “To eat is human, to digest divine.” We need enzymes to digest food. Our living body also needs enzymes for every other operation and chemical reaction to take place. Enzymes constitute the difference between life and death. Only living organisms can produce enzymes, but their capacity to make enzymes is limited and exhaustible.
Our body hosts two types of enzymes: metabolic enzymes, which run our bodies, and digestive enzymes, which participate in digesting our food. Only raw and living foods follow nature’s design and come with their own food enzymes to aid digestion. They are responsible for the release of nutrients out of the foods we eat.
Dr. Edward Howell writes in his remarkable book Enzyme Nutrition that heat over 118° F kills enzymes. If food is cooked, it does not carry enzymes, and the body is forced to use up its own digestive enzymes.
Only living organisms, be it a human being, an animal, or a plant, possess enzymes. No one would ever argue that a dead person is the same as a living one just because the chemical composition of the body is the same. And yet we never think twice about allegations that cooked food is as good as raw food or better. The plant world possesses integrity and the “life factor.” From an enzymatic approach, a picked up fruit or a cut off green is still alive, even though its own source of nourishment has been cut off. Seeds and nuts will reproduce if put into the soil, fruits will continue to ripen even after they have been picked from the tree, a vegetable--be it a carrot, onion, or potato--when put into the ground will sprout.
Enzymes are combinations of proteins, vitamins, and minerals in an active molecular form. Chemists are able to synthesize some of these nutrients, but they have not been able to “breathe life” into them. The “life factor” has never been and probably never will be re-created.
Enzymes are very particular. They cannot tolerate heat, microwave irradiation, or pasteurization. Cooking always removes or spoils the goodness of food. Cooked food points down to the grave, because it is dead. Only humans apply heat to what they eat. Presently, humans apply heat to most of their food prior to consumption. Humans on average as a race, die at or below half their potential life span of chronic illness that is largely diet and lifestyle related. “You won't be surprised that diseases are innumerable--count the cooks.” - Seneca (4 BC-AD 65), Epistles
Cooking is the most profound abuse of food. Cookbooks are full of recipes on how to smother the life out of a meal. The more creative they are in doing so, the more honor we attribute to the cooks. The concept of great cuisine is based on the opinion that plain fruits or vegetables are not appealing to the eye or satisfying to our taste.
Natural food is seen as an enemy. The less the dish reminds one of the original ingredients, the prouder the cooks become. Raw produce is treated not like the divine food but as something to be mutilated and manipulated. It is even called “from scratch,” as if it is a second-class product needing an upgrade. And yet, man is not capable of producing even a simple meal without using the basic ingredients he did not make. The talent of the cook should be applied elsewhere, because the basic fruits and vegetables he begins with are nutritionally superior to the most sophisticated creations he ends up with.
Traditional cooking alters the taste buds into being incapable of appreciating the flavor and taste of raw fruits and vegetables. We become more concerned with pleasing our perverted palate and satisfying our coarse sensation than with providing nourishment to our body.
By cooking our food, we are killing nutrients that keep us alive and healthy. After we grill or roast, bake or boil, sauté or stew, we produce some decadent matter with no nutritional value and only by using salt or sugar abundantly can we get it to pass our taste buds. All cooks rely on salt, sugar, and spices to have their creations appreciated. Cooking without spices smells awful. Not surprisingly, spices were originally used to disguise decaying and decomposing food.

How delicious is a fresh apple! But we put it in an oven and it becomes a squashy, mushy, shriveled mass requiring a load of sugar so one can eat it. In cooking, the original colors of fruits and vegetables are dulled and the initial variety of flavors is altered. Make no mistake, the nutritional value is gone as well.

It is ironic, but not incidental, that fresh produce is used for decoration of this bland and dead food. We decorate this lifeless, tasteless, and shapeless mess with fresh green leaves and brightly colored veggies to deceive our eyes. We add spices to disguise the smell. We load it with sugar and salt to cheat our taste buds.
Nowadays, health-conscious people know processed food is devoid of nutrients and try their best to avoid it. But somehow, home cooking escapes the stigma of “processed.” Cooking is processing! And the difference between home cooking and manufactured foodstuffs is the same difference as between “dead” and “very dead.” We hear everywhere the less food is processed, the better. Why process it at all?
Most Americans do not eat the 5-9 recommended servings of fruit and vegetables each and every day. And if you haven’t heard yet…in January 2005 these government recommended allotments have been increased to 9-13 serving. Between the lines government is telling us in order to be healthy we need to go on the raw food diet. Since if you eat 13 servings of fresh fruit and vegetables per day you will not need or want anything else.

By Tonya Zavasta

Your Right To Be Beautiful: The Miracle of Raw Foods - Second Edition<img style="BORDER-RIGHT: medium none; They are the keepers of the tribe’s memories and the holders of wisdom. As such, the elderly are honored and respected members of tribes. In many modern cultures, however, this is often not the case. Many elderly people say that they feel ignored, left out, and disrespected. This is a sad commentary on modernization, but it doesn’t have to be this way. We can change this situation by taking the time to examine our attitudes about the elderly and taking action.

Modern societies tend to be obsessed with the ideas of newness, youth, and progress. Scientific studies tell us how to do everything – from the way we should raise our kids to what we need to eat for breakfast. As a result, the wisdom that is passed down from older generations is often disregarded. Of course, grandparents and retired persons have more than information to offer the world. Their maturity and experience allows for a larger perspective of life, and we can learn a lot from talking to elderly people. It’s a shame that society doesn’t do more to allow our older population to continue to feel productive for the rest of their lives, but you can help to make change. Perhaps you could help facilitate a mentorship program that would allow children to be tutored by the elderly in retirement homes. The elderly make wonderful storytellers, and creating programs where they could share their real life experiences with others is another way to educate and inspire other genera! tions.

Take stock of your relationships with the elderly population. Maybe you don’t really listen to them because you hold the belief that their time has passed and they are too old to understand what you are going through. You may even realize that you don’t have any relationships with older people. Try to understand why and how our cultural perception of the elderly influences the way you perceive them. Look around you and reach out to someone who is elderly – even if you are just saying hello and making small talk. Resolve to be more aware of the elderly. They are our mentors, wise folk, and the pioneers that came before us and paved the way for our future.

If we would only listen!

This and more inspiring article here:

Making Sushi is an Art

Photo: Making sushi is an art

I love sushi.
I found a very interesting instrument - Sushezi Sushi Maker used to make sushi in easy way at home.

Let us go for a journey- if possible into a forest, or wild place. Let your mind be free. Allow time for this journey.

Try to select a landscape where there are rocks, trees, and possibly running water. If you can't go to a forest, go to a big park, or bring a piece of solid rock home. The important thing for any yoga is to be in the right frame of mind, and that you allow time. Always remember, time is your friend.

The re-enchantment of the world comes from active identification with those primordial rhythms of life whose beat you will find in yourself - if you look deep enough. Everything that is was once a rock. The earth is the same element that was once a rock but it now carries and nurtures life. There is no life without water, and trees are magnificant and powerful creations. You can allow yourself to identify with all these elements. When you understand how it feels to feel empathy with these elements you will rediscover some important elements in yourself.

-Henryk Skolimowski, from Ecoyoga: Practice & Meditations for Walking in Beauty on the Earth, p. 32

********

Henry Skolimowski is Chairman of Ecological Philosophy at the University of Warsaw; he is also Professor of Philosophy at the University of Michigan.
The Eco-Philosophy Center

EcoYoga

A Remarkable woman...

I Was Born This Way

I met Allison through blogging more than 2 years ago. Maybe you know her, if not, please visit her blog.

Born with no arms or legs in December, 1970, Allison Wetherbee has faced challenges few could ever imagine. In the book, I Was Born This Way , her faith, courage and humor are shown as she tells the story of her life. The first part of this book describes her life defining moments including graduating from college with a master's degree, and working as a mental health therapist. The second part of this book is full of devotions and stories of inspiration.

Allison's blog:
http://iwasbornthisway-allison.blogspot.com/

Allison Wetherbee doesn’t mind talking about her disability, in fact she wrote a book about growing up with it.
I Was Born This Way ".

Click HERE to read the article from newspaper The Dadeville Record.

Allison's website:
http://www.allisonwetherbee.com/

"I am strong. It helps us to find our way.

For a month, I've been recommending the greatest book I read about healing, knowledge, hope, healthy life style... and much more. After reading all information, this therapy has the longest and best track record.
Healing the Gerson Way: Defeating Cancer and Other Chronic Diseases

I bought "Healing the Gerson Way" in English version and in Polish version and I never regreted it.
It is the best written book and very readable. Most importantly, Healing the Gerson Way is about healing chronic diseases other than cancer, including many that are supposedly "hopeless".
You can find there explanations on the therapy as it instructs on exactly how to do it yourself.

Knowledge helps us to find our way to be healthy.

Sometimes we think that our knowledge is adequate.

Here is a professor's of medicine story:

In 1992, Y.H., a Japanese professor of medicine, found himself unable to have a bowel movement. Surgery, combined with liver biopsy, disclosed colon malignancy, wich had already spread to the liver. Professor Y.H. agreed to four mild chemotherapy treatments, but these resulted in the growth of the liver metastases. The patient abandoned the chemotherapy and embarked on the Gerson Therapy, following the directions in Dr. Gerson's book.
Fourteen years later, he is fully recovered, with a clean liver, and has successfully treated many cancer patients with the same method.
He described his experience in his book (only available in Japanese) and has trained a few of his colleagues in the Gerson Therapy.
At present, he is following up some 500 cancer cases, which have shown positive responses to the Gerson protocol he now uses.

Part of book "Healing the Gerson Way: Defeating Cancer and Other Chronic Diseases",

chapter 27,

page 302 - Case Histories of recovered Patients.

It is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows - Epictetus

Knowledge is power. But mind what you read. Open-minded people keen to learn new things read as many health books as they can find and end up confused. The chances are that if you read 10 health books, you are likely to get 12 different opinions. Please mind what you read

and make the right choice. Listening to your body and Your intuition is important too.

Knowledge is of two kinds: we know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information upon it - Samuel Johnson

Healing the Gerson Way: Defeating Cancer and Other Chronic Diseases

Never Lose Hope!

Healing the Gerson Way: Defeating Cancer and Other Chronic Diseases

It happened 18 years ago.
For the first time in my life my appetite was gone. I couldn't look at food, even the smell of it made me nauseous. It felt like torture even though there was no pain. Never before, even when I was sick, had I felt this disgust for food.
I felt horrible and day after day I was becoming weaker. At this point I felt very strongly that my life was coming to an end.

It turned out that I had an advanced stage of cancer (more on this later). In short, the only option I was given was - chemotherapy.
Fortunately I decided not to choose chemotherapy (thanks to a few supportive people).
So, what did I do?
Almost everything that Gerson's Therapy suggests. Of course at that time I hadn't heard about him or his therapy. I did what my instincts told me to do based on the knowledge I had at that time.
After 3 months I felt like I was getting my life back. My medical results slowly started to improve. At the end my doctor told me that my results are fantastic. I felt great too. In my doctors opinion if my cancer didn't come back within the year it would mean that I am cancer free.
Like I mentioned before, this happened 18 years ago.

Few days ago by accident (there are no accidents) I came across a book and a film about Dr. Gerson's therapy.
I was very surprised that after all this time, this is the first time I had heard about this therapy, unknowingly this therapy saved my life.
It felt like I was reading about myself.

I immediately decided to share this with everyone. Who knows who could benefit from this information.
I would very much like to recommend this film, the link is below. It takes about 90 min, but it is worth it.
Your time will not be wasted.
This film can be watched in segments, when it is convenient for you.
Look here:
Never Lose Hope

There is nothing more important than health!!
Remember it is easier to live a healthy life than to fix an unhealthy one.

Healing the Gerson Way: Defeating Cancer and Other Chronic Diseases
*****

Gandhi's Health Guide

Millions of people today continue to be inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's teachings because he was a genuine man of God. He also was an original thinker with an inquiring mind who refused to accept untested principles. What many people may not know is that Gandhi's thoughts on health are as original as his thoughts on spirituality and politics. This book shows how his renunciation of Western medicine transformed the man and his ideas.
Gandhi's Health Guide

The great Mahatma Gandhi, at the age of 32 became a student of nature cure. First he became a vegetarian and then a fruitarian. After six months as a fruitarian, he said in his book - The Health Guide:
"A period of six months is all too short to arrive at any definite conclusions on such a vital matter as a complete change of diet. This, however, I can say, that during this period I have been able to keep well where others have been attacked by disease, and my physical as well as my mental powers are now greater than before. I may not be able to lift heavy loads, but I can do hard labor for much longer time without fatigue. I can also do more mental work and with better persistence and resoluteness. I have tried a fruit diet on many sickly people invariably with great advantage. My own experience, as well as my study of the subject has confirmed me in the conviction that a fruit diet is the best one for us." - Gandhi.

Gandhi's Health Guide

Journey to the World Record

Tomorrow The Train is a travel memoir of an incredible journey to the world record on rail travel. Mona Tippins set out alone to break the Guinness World Record. Her journeys took her through thirty-three countries. The twenty-seven chapters of this book reveal some of the adventures she experienced along the way. She was robbed, beaten, and chased by drug addicts. More than once she was mistaken for a prostitute, a spy and a beggar. She traveled 79,841 unduplicated miles. Mona broke the record in February 1997, and was listed in the 1998 Guinness Book of World Records.

About the Author
Mona Tippins was born in Princeton, Indiana, and raised in Washington, D.C. She has lived in California, Florida, and Germany, but now calls Arkansas home. She and her husband Herb have two children and four grandchildren. Traveling has always been a favorite pastime for Mona, but her train journey to the world record remains tops in her travel memories. Her love of trains was inherited from her mother. Mona's mother worked for the railroad in Washington, D.C. during World War II. Her father worked laying track in California in the 1920s. Mona is the author of European Train Travel Tips.

Excerpt.

© Reprinted by permission. He asked if I would have dinner with him in Warsaw. We spoke in German. I told him I would be leaving Warsaw on a night train, so it would be impossible. I thanked him for the invitation. Then, he hugged me. He said, "No, I thank you. I thank America for what it did in the war."

It was the first time a Polish veteran had hugged me because of our role in the war, but several German veterans had hugged me for the same reason. And each time, I cried because our former enemy understood that we were right. I was never more proud to be an American.

As soon as the train pulled into Warsaw, I boarded a night express to Berlin. I looked into the first compartment in the corridor, and saw only a briefcase on the overhead storage rack. That was encouraging. I figured the owner of the briefcase was a commuter who would soon detrain, leaving me a private place to stretch out and sleep. I put my backpack on the rack, and stepped out quickly into the corridor to look out the open window. From the corner of my eye, I saw only the dark suit of the man who grabbed my head from behind. He forced me around toward the compartment door, and slammed the right side of my face into the doorjamb. I saw stars! He pushed past me, grabbed his briefcase, and disappeared down the hall.

When the stars stopped blinking, I tried to find a conductor, but the door leading to the sleeping carriage was locked; I couldn't go through. I hadn't seen the man's face; I couldn't identify him, anyway. I would never know why he hurt me. He must have thought I was going to steal his briefcase.

My face was bleeding, and my eye was swelling. How could he have done that to me? I was afraid to go to sleep. In the washroom I discovered the source of the blood, a deep gash on the side of my face, just under my eye. Afraid of infection from the non-potable water from the tap, I wiped my face and eye with an alcohol pad. Ouch!

In the morning in Berlin, I boarded InterCity # 501, the Schauinsland, to Frankfurt; I still had a day's journey to reach my base in Bad Kreuznach. I didn't travel for a week; I was ashamed to go out, because I had another black eye. It looked worse than the one I was given on the street in Berlin.

Read more:
Editorial Reviews

Life is so good..

Life Is So Good - There is so much wisdom in this book!

Product Description
In this remarkable book, 103-year-old George Dawson, a slave's grandson who learned to read at age 98, reflects on his life and offers valuable lessons in living as well as a fresh, firsthand view of America during the twentieth century. Richard Glaubman captures Dawson's irresistible voice and view of the world, offering insights into humanity, history, hardships, and happiness. From segregation and civil rights, to the wars, presidents, and defining moments in history, George Dawson's description and assessment of the last century inspires readers with the message that-through it all-has sustained him: "Life is so good. In this remarkable book, George Dawson, a 101-year-old man who learned to read when he was 98, reflects on the philosophy he learned from his father?a belief that "life is so good"?as he offers valuable lessons in living and a fresh, firsthand view of America during the twentieth century.

Born in 1898 in Marshall, Texas, the grandson of slaves, George Dawson tells how his father, despite hardships, always believed in seeing the richness in life and trained his children to do the same. As a boy, George had to go to work to help support the family, and so he did not attend school or learn to read; yet he describes how he learned to read the world and survive in it. "We make our own way," he says. "Trouble is out there, but a person can leave it alone and just do the right thing. Then, if trouble still finds you, you've done the best you can."

At ninety-eight, George decided to learn to read and enrolled in a literacy program, becoming a celebrated student. "Every morning I get up and I wonder what I might learn that day. You just never know."

In Life Is So Good, he shares wisdom on everything from parenting ("With children, you got to raise them. Some parents these days are growing children, not raising them") to attitude ("People worry too much.
